The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be built by an international partnership, which may include the National Science Foundation. The telescope will be sited on Mauna Kea, Hawai’i, subject to final construction permission. It will have a 30-m-diameter primary mirror composed of 492 1.45-m hexagonal segments, and will support both adaptive optics and natural seeing instruments.
If construction proceeds as currently planned, early science operations could begin in 2018.
