The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) will be built by an international partnership, which may include the National Science Foundation. The telescope will be sited at the Las Campanas Observatory It will have a primary mirror composed of 7 8.4-m-diameter honeycomb segments, and will support both adaptive optics and natural seeing instruments. This configuration will have the resolving power of a 24.5-m aperture.
If construction proceeds as currently planned, early science operations could begin in 2018.
